Vocational Pathway Program: Year 10

Vocational Pathway ProgramThe Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a hands-on option for students in Years 11 and 12.

It gives practical work-related experience, as well as literacy and numeracy skills, and the opportunity to build personal skills that are important for life and work. It is a recognised senior qualification by the Victorian Curriculum & Assessment Authority (VCAA). At Penola Catholic College we have been offering the VCAL program as an alternative Year 11 and 12 Certificate since 2003. It is designed to provide students with the skills, knowledge and attitudes to make informed choices about possible careers or further education.

At Year 10 we offer a program for those students who are highly suited and strongly motivated to undertake studies in the VCAL once in Years 11 and 12. This does not mean that they would not have access to VCE studies in Years 11 and 12, but it allows those who have a clear sense of direction towards apprenticeships, traineeships or TAFE an opportunity to begin to map out their pathway from Year 10.

Selection and entry into this program would be through staff recommendation and discussion between College staff such as the Vocational Education Services Coordinator, The Year Level Coordinators and students and their parents/guardians.

Students who are invited into this program would enrol in the following subjects.

  • Certificate I in Vocational Preparation
  • English
  • Maths
  • Physical Education
  • Religious Education

It also includes a range of semester units from: Arts, Science, Technology, Languages and Humanities.

Successful applicants may undertake another VET certificate offered within the College or apply for a subject from the Accelerated Studies Program. An Information evening in July for parents and students interested in this program will be held at the College, please call reception to find out more information.

Accelerated Studies

Students who demonstrate very high levels of achievement in Year 9 subjects may be accepted in the Accelerated Studies program in Year 10.
