Student Services & EAL
Penola Catholic College has a strong tradition of actively promoting student wellbeing and personal growth along with the important goal of striving for academic excellence.
Our Student Services teams provide extra in-class and individual support to help maximise learning opportunities for students with additional learning needs as well as liaising closely with all teachers to support student learning. Specialist support for students’ pastoral needs is provided by the College Psychologists. The School Psychologists provide confidential counselling to students for a range of issues including: work and study skills; student/teacher concerns; family and friendship issues; health and personal wellbeing concerns.
Students are welcome to self refer for counselling support, however, parents and teachers are also able to request this student support. Students with serious concerns regarding the wellbeing or safety of their peers are also able to refer these concerns to the psychologists. Further invaluable support is offered to parents by the Home Liaison Officer, for families experiencing times of stress arising from situations such as ill health, bereavement, and personal distress.
We encourage students and their family to consider support from the Student Services department as another educational resource available to all students and their families. Students and parents are always welcome to contact us to discuss how we may be of assistance to them.
The College provides specialist EAL support to students and families, catering for the pastoral and academic wellbeing of students from language backgrounds other than English. Dedicated EAL classes from years 7-12, in-classroom language and literacy support, parent seminars, and translation services are provided to ensure all students are fully engaged in the life of the College.
