Newsletter - Volume 5 - 4 April 2019

From The Principal: Chris Caldow

Dear Members of the Penola Catholic College community,

I wish each of you a happy and safe holiday. As you reflect on the passion of Jesus this coming Holy Week, may your own hearts be made sensitive to the suffering of others and the value of all human life, so that we may embrace the resurrection and hope of Easter when we return in Term 2 with a desire to be even more helpful, caring and considerate of our fellow travellers.

We pause to acknowledge the pain and grief that New Zealanders, Australians and the world feel at this troubled time in Christchurch. During times of loss, we find ourselves upset and disillusioned by things we do not understand. We search for answers, yet know they won’t be found. Our thoughts and prayers are with those most impacted by such atrocity.

As Jacinda Ardern, the Prime Minister of New Zealand stated in her address to Parliament: “And in this role, I wanted to speak directly to the families. We cannot know your grief, but we can walk with you at every stage. We can, and we will surround you with aroha, manaakitanga (love, care) and all that makes us, us. Our hearts are heavy but our spirit is strong.’

May St Mary of the Cross MacKillop journey with us.

Stations of the Cross

One of our Year 12 RE classes led by Mrs Tania Mateski will perform the Stations of the Cross on Thursday, 4 April.  This will take place during Period 1 on the Broadmeadows Campus and Period 4 for the Glenroy Campus.  I thank Mrs Mateski and her class for their efforts in advance.

RISE Festival

The RISE Festival was held at Penola Catholic College on Saturday, 23 March. This festival is for Catholic youth aged between 15 and 25 and is run by the Archdiocesan Office for Youth.  There were over 800 people in attendance with a range of different sessions run throughout the day.  There were school groups, parish groups and individual young Catholics who were involved in the day. My thanks to Mr Rob Dullard, Ms Nicole Allan and Ms Melissa Fry for all of their organisation of this event and to Mr Peter Ratcliffe, Mr John Gribble and out Maintenance Team for their efforts in setting up and packing up at the end of the day.  Thanks also to our Youth Ministers, Mr James Mein and Mr Gilbert Mein for their efforts on the day.

Mr Ernie Pisani taking Long Service Leave

Mr Ernie Pisani is taking Long Service Leave for all of Term 2.  Stuart Harrison has been appointed as Head of the Broadmeadows Campus for Term 2 and Ms Erin Bonavia has been appointed as Head of the Glenroy Campus for Term 2.  I am happy to announce that Mrs Katherine Jones will be teaching the Year 12 Health and Human Development class in Term 2.  Mrs Jones has extensive experience in teaching Health and Human Development, is part of the Exam Setting panel and an author of one of the textbooks used for this subject.  I am in the process of finalising the Year 12 Psychology Teacher to replace Ms Bonavia and will write to each family once this process has been finalised.  I am confident that our replacement teachers will work with our students to ensure that they are not disadvantaged in anyway with this staffing change.

Japanese Homestay

On Friday, 15 March, 15 students and 2 staff arrived from our Japanese sister school, Dokkyo Saitama High School. As part of this visit, these students and staff completed a range of excursions and activities as well as getting a taste of Australian life through their homestay experience.  They left us on Monday, 25 March for a short visit to Sydney prior to returning to Japan.  I thank the 15 Penola families who agreed to host these students for their generosity in giving our sister school students a taste of Australian life. Without their generosity and support, this program would not be able to run which would be a significant loss for us as a College and for our students.

Classics Study Tour to Italy and Greece

15 students will be involved in a Classics Study Tour to Italy and Greece over the holiday break.  This tour gives them a first hand experience of the artefacts, architecture and artworks associated with Classical societies and is invaluable in their studies of Classical societies.  My thanks to Liviana Daniele for all of her organisation of the tour, Ms Soula Argyropoulos and Mr Ernie Pisani for accompanying these students.

Sporting events

Congratulations to Ms Danielle Prescott who coached the winning Senior Girls Netball Team in Division 2 SACCSS Grand Final against Kolbe Catholic College. Congratulations to Mr Arnel Davis and Mr Shane Griffin who coached the winning Senior Boys Cricket Team against CRC Sydenham in the Division 2 SACCSS Grand Final. Our College Athletics Carnival takes place this Wednesday and I thank staff in advance for their efforts. Congratulations to students who represented Penola Catholic College at the SACCSS Swimming Carnival held on Tuesday, 26 March at Melbourne Sports and Aquatics Centre.

A Prayer for the end of Term

Loving Father,

as we come to the end

of another term

we turn to you in confidence

and place any difficult moments

into your healing hands.

Enable us to leave behind

regrets or bitterness,

entrusting the past to your mercy,

the present to your love,

and the future to your providence.

Help us appreciate more

the need to keep a good balance

in our lives.

May the term break be for us

a time of rest and recreation

to help restore us

and re-create us

as we enjoy

more of the love and presence

of our families,

on whom we ask your blessing.

We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.

Chris Caldow

Student Photographs

A reminder to all parents that you need to notify the College if you do not give permission for your son or daughter’s photograph to be published in newsletters or promotional materials.  We would like to begin to place more photographs and videos on MyPenola and so I take this opportunity to remind you of the student permission form for photographs.  If we have not received your permission form back at the College we have assumed that your consent has been provided.  It is the responsibility of each family to make this decision and notify the College if you decide to exclude your son or daughter from having their photograph published.  In practical terms, this will mean that your son or daughter will need to be excluded from most group shots such as class photographs as these are published in our Year Book each year.

Parking Restrictions

There is restricted parking in Gibson Street, Broadmeadows, William Street, Glenroy and the surrounding streets in both these areas.

Please take note of the signage as parking officers are constantly patrolling the area. It is advised that parents are not to drop off or up pick students on the school grounds. Parking in the reception car park is restricted to parents wishing to see reception or the accounts office only. It is not to be used for drop off/pick up of students.

Thanking you in advance.

Did you know?

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,

Did you know that we have a literacy improvement program in place here at Penola Catholic College? In fact, did you know that our literacy improvement program commenced all the way back in 2012? Since its inception this program has increased in resources to where we now have four staff who are dedicated literacy coaches.

Did you know that these literacy coaches work with our teaching staff? Our literacy coaches work with staff to improve their teaching practice. This is done in a variety of ways, one of which is classroom visits. Our literacy coaches are invited into classes where they help elicit feedback on how we can continue to better service the needs of our student body. Our total classroom visits over recent years have been as follows:

Did you know that we are seeing some fantastic positive trends with our students’ outcomes here at Penola Catholic College? We have a range of measures in place to monitor how our students are tracking, one of which is using the NAPLAN test. We have been comparing our Year 7 – 9 growth with that of schools from the rest of Victoria. The positive is that we are seeing that we are improving our students at an increasing rate across a range of skills.

On behalf of the literacy improvement team and the entire teaching staff I hope this short read has helped inform you as to just one of the many ways we are trying to give your son or daughter the best possible outcome they can have for life beyond secondary school.

Warm regards,
Adam Hipwell
Literacy Leader

2019 Camps, Sports and Excursion Fund (CSEF) Changes

Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities. It is part of making Victoria the Education State and the Government’s commitment to breaking the link between a student’s background and their outcomes.

To Submit a CSEF Application in 2019

If you have applied for the CSEF  in a previous year, you do not need to complete an application form in 2019 unless there has been a change in your family circumstances. The school will apply for the CSEF on your behalf.

You will ONLY need to submit an application form in 2019 if any of the following changes have occurred:

• New student enrolments: your child has started or changed schools in 2019 or you did not apply at the same school in a previous year

• Changed family circumstances: such as: A change of custody, change of name, concession card number, or new siblings commencing at the school in 2019.
