Newsletter - Volume 1 - 8th February 2018

From The Principal: Chris Caldow

Welcome back to all students and families. We particularly welcome those who are joining the College community for the first time.  We have a total of 262 new Year 7 students along with six Year 8 students, eight Year 9 students, fifteen Year 10 students, ten Year 11 students and two Year 12 students who are new to Penola.  In total there are 303 new students at Penola out of a total enrolment of 1455 students.  This means that over one in five students are new to Penola and I would ask all within our community to go out of their way to ensure that our new students are welcomed and supported in their transitional period.  In total we have 204 new families for 2018 so a particularly warm welcome to these families.  I hope that your time within the Penola community is both enriching and rewarding.

I am really looking forward to this year at Penola Catholic College and we have two focuses for the year; one is to continue to build capacity in teaching staff, in fostering curiosity and developing powerful learning and the other is incorporating ‘Data’ to complement and develop teaching practice to enhance individual student growth. To this end, this school improvement focus will tie together a number of areas that we have already been working on namely explicit teaching of literacy, planning and coaching teams and improving student outcomes. Professional Learning will be targeted to assist staff in using data effectively and developing student curiosity and powerful learning.

It will be a year of reviews with my Principal’s formative review taking place on February 22 & 23 of this term, followed by our school review the following week. Monday February 26 to Thursday March 1.  The review tool is the ACER National School Improvement Tool and involves a number of interviews with staff, students and parents as well as classroom observations.  Further reviews will take place in Terms 3 & 4 of the roles of Deputy Principal: Teaching and Learning (Ms Lucy D’Angelo), Deputy Principal: Faith and Mission (Ms Nicole Allan) and Business Manager (Ms Jennifer Vinten).

Our theme for the year is “Gratitude is the memory of the heart” (St Mary MacKillop, 1907).  This theme is particularly relevant for all of us as we have much to be grateful for.  I would hope that our students and their families are grateful for the education that they receive at Penola Catholic College.  I believe that our College facilities are second to none and our gardens and environment is another thing to be grateful for.  Most importantly in a school setting are the relationships that are established both between colleagues, students, parents and the broader community.  It is these relationships that are foundational in the teaching and learning process and ultimately builds our culture and gratitude for all that we do.

As such, it is important that all students begin the year well in every context. It is important that the College uniform is worn well at all times; it means getting down to the core business of working hard in class and working with every teacher to produce the best set of results possible; it involves challenging oneself to participate in the vast array of co-curricular activities available; it means embracing the social justice programmes at the College and contributing to these. The evidence clearly supports the theory that the students who get the most out of schools such as Penola Catholic College are those who enthusiastically embrace the educational, cultural, sporting and social justice offerings available.

In recent times we have been aware of members of our community who have suffered loss, including:

• Julie Lyons on the passing of her father-in-law, Noel Lyons after passing away on January 2, 2018.

• Danny Diaz on the passing of his grandmother, Constanza Lucena at 100 years of age.

Please keep the following staff in your prayers as well after recent surgery – Elizabeth George who had a shoulder operation, Arnel Davis who had his lower right leg re-aligned, Deveraj Kumar who had a fusion in his spine and Mark Johnstone who had his appendix removed.

On a brighter note we congratulate Roger Turner and his wife, Cleo on the birth of their son, Marlowe Benedict Turner on December 21, 2017 and Melissa Vella and her husband, Mark on the safe arrival of Jackson Anthony Vella on January 10, 2018.  Congratulations to our Drums teacher, Ben Stivala and his wife, Melissa on the birth of Ella Rae Stivala on January 18, 2018. Stephanie & Mike Cassino had a baby girl, Mattia on Thursday January 25, 2018.

I have provided a list of staff new to the College for 2018 including those who are returning to the College after a period of leave:

A key element in helping your child to succeed at the College is communication between you and your child’s teachers. While the student diary is the primary means of communication between teachers and families we also encourage other means of communication.  The email addresses of all staff at the College is the first initial of the Christian name followed by their surname. For example Mr Ernie Pisani.  Ernie’s email address is: episani@penola.vic.edu.au .

We hope that this will further facilitate our ability to work closely with you in catering for the welfare and educational needs of your child.  Your child’s Homeroom teacher should be the first port of call for any enquiries with the school.  Please feel free to make contact with me if you have concerns that are unable to be resolved by your child’s Homeroom Teacher, Subject Teacher, Year Level Coordinators or Head of Campus.

I hope that all students will settle into a productive routine as quickly as possible; I hope they will participate in activities new to them this year; and I look forward to witnessing a genuine spirit of cooperation and partnership between all students and their teachers this year.

2017 was our best year for student results with our VCE median study score increasing to 29, our average ATAR increasing to 59.94, 95% of students who applied for an ATAR receiving an offer and 86% receiving one of their top 3 choices. We also achieved our best ever Growth results for NAPLAN from Years 7 to 9. The Year 12 results were very good, particularly when you compare their predicted scores to their actual scores.

Bell Times

A reminder that bell times have changed for this year and there is no longer an early leave day.  I have listed the bell times below:

College Assembly

Our first whole school assembly will take place on Friday 9th February commencing at 9.00am. Year 7 students will be inducted and those 2017 Year 12 students who received an ATAR of 80 or more will be recognised with the presentation of plaques.  The Dux of the College, Adam Zuchowicz, will be invited to address the students and staff.  We also asked students who received a study score of 40 or above to this assembly to be recognised.

Letter to Penola Community - From the CEM

Given the high number of new members of our community, I thought that this prayer was appropriate to begin the school year:

As we step into this new year,

Restore our spirits.

Renew our passion for sharing your wisdom

And nurture our compassion

For those in need of greater support.

Transform us as we seek to transform:

Guide us as we seek to guide;

Open our minds and hearts

As we seek to open minds and hearts

To the Good News of justice and peace.

Help us listen more deeply

To the world and to your Word,

So we can walk with those in our care,

Attentive to the Wisdom that

Calls us all to the Kingdom of God.

Student Photographs

A reminder to all parents that you need to notify the College if you do not give permission for your son or daughter’s photograph to be published in newsletters or promotional materials.  We would like to begin to place more photographs and videos on MyPenola and so I take this opportunity to remind you of the student permission form for photographs.  If we have not received your permission form back at the College we have assumed that your consent has been provided.  It is the responsibility of each family to make this decision and notify the College if you decide to exclude your son or daughter from having their photograph published.  In practical terms, this will mean that your son or daughter will need to be excluded from most group shots such as class photographs as these are published in our Year Book each year.

2018 Camps, Sports and Excursion Fund (CSEF) Changes

The Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET) performed a review of the 2017 Camps, Sports and Excursion Fund (CSEF) payment and application process with a view of simplifying the process for 2018. Changes include:

• The requirement for parents / legal guardians to complete and submit a new application form each year has been removed. This change has been made to simplify the application process for parents / legal guardians and reduce the administrative workload for schools

• Parents / guardians who received the CSEF payment in 2017 at Penola Catholic College will not be required to submit a new application form in 2018 (or subsequent years)

• The automatic Centrelink validation process will verify CSEF eligibility by confirming if the parent / guardian holds a valid concession card

• A CSEF form will only be required to be completed if:

• new students are to enrol at Penola Catholic College (includes students in Year 7 2018)

• parents / guardians applying for CSEF for the first time.

CSEF eligibility DATES

For concession card holders CSEF eligibility will be subject to the parent/legal guardian’s concession card being successfully validated with Centrelink on the first day of either term one (29 January 2018) or term two (16 April 2018).
