VCAL - Essential Services

This year has seen our current circumstance highlight the importance of the essential service worker. The VCAL program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to ideally commence either School based apprenticeships or traineeships. These opportunities are hard to come by and this may mean not all are privileged enough to have one.

At present the demand for building and maintenance services remains unrestricted, this means VCAL students who fall in this category are at work each Tuesday, Wednesday and some on a Saturday.

There are still the stories of students who have lost SBAT arrangements, particularly 2 who were employed by Qantas and in the hospitality sector at the Airport.

On the positive side the college proudly boasts students who are both employed in chain of supply, at employers such as long-term partner REECE, whilst others in actual trades continue on work sites or conducting maintenance
activities.

The reality is real life experiences prepare these students for life beyond the Shadows of Mannes House.

Thank you.

Arnel Davis
VCAL Liaison
