Subject selection and transition

It is that time of year when the students will need to complete their choices in subjects for next year.  I have outlined a number of details below for you and all students to consider.  As a result of remote learning, we have shifted things to an online platform and trust that we have catered to your child’s needs.  Below you will find a number of hyperlinks through MyPenola for your reference, which have been posted on the Year Level Pages for each student too.  Please liaise with your child’s homeroom teacher if you have any questions or the subject teacher about subject-specific questions.  We look forward to supporting each student through this phase in their learning.

Year 7s into Year 8

Later this year, students in Year 7 will be choosing their language.  That will give Year 7 students greater exposure to their current language before making their language choice for next year.  More details will come as the semester progresses.

Years 8 into Year 9

Students are asked to complete two subjects for each of the key learning areas in year 9, and then have the ability to choose electives to fill their timetable.  Please watch Mrs Sandra Warren’s Vodcast here and once students have completed their practice book, in consultation with you.  Subject planners will be submitted to their Homeroom teachers to check their choices for 2021.  We recommend, as a guide, that students choose two subjects in each of the faculties for 2021.  The subject choices on offer can be found here, on page 7 of the Curriculum Handbook.

Years 9 into 10

Students need to complete their third subject of each of the key learning areas after having completed their two subjects in Year 9.  Students have more choice in Year 10 as they begin to engage more deeply with their pathways.  Once students have completed their Subject Pathway Planner and Selection Form located here on the Year 9 Homepage, in consultation with you, they will have a Teams meeting with a staff member of the College and input their final choices together.  The subject choices on offer can be found here, on page 7 of the Curriculum Handbook and from the Curriculum Overview Page here on MyPenola.  There is also a vodcast to explain things in detail for the students too.

For students in Year 9 wishing to accelerate into a VCE subject, the application can be found on the Senior Programs page here.  Please note, there are limits on these applications and students are required to be high performing and receiving well-above the class average in their results.

Years 10 into 11

Students in Year 10, who are choosing the VCE pathway for Year 11 need to complete the VCE Subject Planner and Selection form located here on the Year 10 Homepage before they engage with the school for their course advice session.  It is important that parents and students complete this together.  Once the course advice session takes place, the staff member and student will complete this together on a system called Web Preferences.

Students who have applied to study VCAL in Year 11 also need to ensure their application form is completed by August 14.  All information regarding the VCAL program and the application form can be found on the VCAL page here.  After that, interviews will take place to ensure only worthy candidates with a vocational pathway are admitted into this program.

For students in Year 10 wishing to accelerate into a Year 12 subject, the application can be found on the Senior Programs page here.  Please note, there are limits on these applications and students are required to be high performing and receiving well-above the class average in their results.

Years 11 into 12

Students are to choose their subjects via their web preferences, in consultation with their parents, by August 14.  Students will receive an email with their login details to complete their subject selection this week.  Students need to ensure they have researched their pathways to ensure their subjects align with post-schooling wishes and that any prerequisites are met, before they submit their preferences.  Students are strongly encouraged to engage with Penola’s Careers team to maximise their information and awareness of possible pathways.  Students should engage with the Curriculum Overview Page here on MyPenola as well as communicate with their current teachers.
