Dear parents and carers,

I’m writing to update you regarding the recent positive coronavirus (COVID-19) test at Penola Catholic College and an update regarding the reopening of the College.

Firstly, I’d like to thank the entire school community for your patience and understanding during this difficult time.

I want to reassure you that we are working closely with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Catholic Education Melbourne (CEM) to ensure we receive the best and most timely advice possible, and that the wellbeing of our students and staff is paramount.

A deep clean of the Broadmeadows campus has been completed over the past 2 days and we are ready to resume onsite learning for essential workers’ children and vulnerable students next week.

DHHS has provided direct and specific advice to any individuals who came into close contact with the person who tested positive about self-isolating and looking after themselves.

Members of the school community not contacted by DHHS have not been identified as close contacts and are able to resume normal activities until advised otherwise by DHHS.

It is important that we all continue to monitor our own and the health of our children daily during this time. If you or your child develops any symptoms such as a fever, cough, sore throat or shortness of breath:

  • Stay at home and do not attend school
  • Seek medical advice (call ahead to alert your doctor about the confirmed case of coronavirus (COVID-19) at the school and any symptoms before visiting, and take this letter along)
  • Call the school to let us know.

If you or your child has a health condition or complex health needs, please discuss this with your medical specialist.

At Tuesday’s College Executive meeting we made the decision to extend remote learning for VCE and VCAL students for another week so that they will resume on Monday August 10 at this stage.  We believe that this is in the best interests of staff and students as it ensures no further spread of COVID-19 at school and gives us time to see whether the number of community cases is coming down as well.  The Broadmeadows Campus will reopen on Monday August 3 but it is limited to the children of essential workers and vulnerable students only. ICT services will be conducted out of the Glenroy campus with 2 staff onsite and others providing support remotely.

Years 11 & 12 Homeroom teachers will set up a Microsoft Teams Meeting for Homeroom at 8.35am each day and mark the roll as is currently the case for all Years 7-10 Homerooms.

I know that this may mean uncertainty and another period of dislocation for you and your family. The school is doing everything it can to mitigate the impact of these changes on our community, and to minimise the impact of this disruption on your child’s learning journey.

If there are any changes to the arrangements as listed, we will update you.

We are absolutely committed to working with you through these challenging times. The health and safety of everyone in our school community must remain our highest priority. Thank you for your ongoing understanding at this difficult time.

Yours sincerely,

Chris Caldow
