As some of you may have seen, The Herald Sun Shield competition run by AFL Victoria provided a live link for the grand final.  Despite AFL Victoria listing our school as ‘Panola’ and using the Texas ‘Panola’ school logo, it is with immense pride that I can report that the Penola Broadmeadows Intermediate AFL team has won the Herald Sun Shield competition in a nail-biting finish against Padua College at Marty Busch Oval in Sebastopol.  Penola started brilliantly, kicking the first two goals of the game in the first 5 minutes but then struggled to get ball into our forward line.  Thankfully Padua was inaccurate thus minimising the damage on the scoreboard.

In a tight contest, Penola was just under two goals down at the halfway mark of the final term but like the games against Aquinas and Trinity Colac to reach the decider, our boys dug deep and found a way to win!  Congratulations to all players, Zac Taylor on being awarded the medal for best on ground, Mr Davis who coached superbly and to the support staff comprising of Mrs Jones and Mr Walsh!

A win bigger than Texas!  Year 9 and 10 Penola Catholic College students celebrate a marvellous victory!

Tuesday 10th September saw our year 9 boys basketball team defeat Emmanuel College in the final capping off a stellar season.  Under Coach Steve Woodburn’s guidance, the team started well and maintained a solid lead throughout the game.   This team has performed superbly, finishing the season undefeated and winning the grand final by ten points.  Final score 60 – 50.  Well done gents!

SACCSS Athletics occurred at Lakeside, South Melbourne on Monday 2nd September.  Training started over a month ago and well done to those who attended all sessions.  Congratulations to all Penola students who represented the College.  All students tried their hardest and the P.E. and Sports department were extremely proud of your efforts and behaviour.  I would like to thank Mrs Jones, Mrs Prescott, Mr Smith, Mr Bird and Mr Bell – Warren for working with our athletes during the past six weeks.

And a huge congratulations to the following students who placed on the day and my apologies for Year 11 student Chloe Fitton’s achievements not being listed in the previous newsletter.
